This month, Travel Channel will air Michael Palin’s Around the World in 80 Days, and ahead of episode one Kate Garraway will interview the comic and traveller to celebrate 25 years since the programme began.
In Garraway’s interview, Palin recalls his experiences from his epic voyage across the globe, following in the footsteps of Jules Verne’s fictional hero Phileas Fogg, using any mode of overland transport.
Palin finds the same routes as Fogg wherever possible. However, there are a few luxury trips thrown in for good measure. Leaving from London, Pailin boards the Orient Express, then crosses the Alps, ventures to Corinth Canal and goes along to Athens.
Palin’s journey takes him to the Pyramids in Giza and onto Jeddah, Riyadh and Dubai. In Madras he has to find a connecting boat to Singapore, and later he ends up in Long Beach California, the Rocky Mountains and Aspen, Colorado, via a hot air balloon.
