Broadchurch and Plebs lead nominations at Royal Television Society Programme Awards

The ITV crime drama draws recognition for Olivia Colman and Jodie Whittaker - but their co-star David Tennant misses out

ITV’s crime drama phenomenon Broadchurch, which gripped the nation for eight weeks last spring, leads the pack with four nominations at this year’s Royal Television Society Programme Awards.

Olivia Colman, who played police investigator DS Ellie Miller, and Jodie Whittaker, who was the mother of the murdered boy at the heart of the mystery, are up against My Mad Fat Diary star Sharon Rooney in the female actor category, while writer Chris Chibnall lines up alongside Dennis Kelly, who penned dark fantasy drama Utopia, and Marlon Smith and Daniel Fajemisin-Duncan for another Channel 4 drama, Run.

Colman’s co-star David Tennant is conspicuously absent, though. Tennant played fellow detective DI Alec Hardy in Broadchurch, but is kept out of the running in the male actor category by two other TV cops – Stephen Dillane in The Tunnel and Idris Elba in Luther – as well as Lennie James in Run.

Meanwhile, ITV2 comedy Plebs, set in Ancient Rome, is up for three awards, for best scripted comedy, best comedy writers in Sam Leifer and Tom Basden and comedy performance for Ryan Sampson, who plays recalcitrant slave Grumio – and finds himself up against BBC1 big-hitter Brendan O’Carroll for Mrs Brown’s Boys, and Rebecca Front for Sky Arts confection Psychobitches.

Outside of the UK, it’s dragons versus zombies as fantasy drama Game of Thrones battles French supernatural tale The Returned and a Storyville documentary about Russian punk activists Pussy Riot.

The Awards will be presented by comedian Tim Vine at a ceremony on Tuesday 18 March at the Grosvenor House Hotel, London.
