The Dallas Buyers Club has picked up the prestigious best actor award at this year's Oscars in Hollywood

Matthew McConaughey has won best actor at this year’s Oscars.

The 44-year-old Texas-born has taken home the prestigious prize for his role as Ron Woodroof in the film Dallas Buyers Club.

The role, which McConaughey reportedly lost 38 pounds for, saw the star play an AIDs patient who took on pharmaceutical companies during the 1980s.

First time Oscar nominee McConaughey beat off competition from American Hustle’s Christian Bale, Nebraska’s Bruce Dern, The Wolf of Wall Street’s Leonardo DiCaprio and 12 Years a Slave’s Chiwetel Ejiofor.

Accepting his statuette, McConaughey thanked his director Jean-Marc Vallee and his co-stars Jared Leto and Jennifer Garner, his late father, his family and God.

McConaughey starred alongside fellow Oscars nominee Jared Leto and Jennifer Garner in the Jean-Marc Vallée directed movie, which was also nominated for best picture.
