Radio listening in Britain is at its highest level since records began in 1999, with 48.38 million people listening each week.
The latest figures from industry audience measuring body Rajar also shows a record 36.22 million listening to all BBC Radio stations in the period covered – the “quarter” which runs from September 16 to December 15 last year. This compares to 35.19 million last year and 35.11 million the previous quarter.
BBC Radio’s share of listening against commercial competitors however fell slightly with a 55.2% share compared with 55.3% last year and 53.4% in the last quarter.
One of the biggest winners was Radio 4 which recorded a weekly reach of 11.21 million during the period, up from 10.87 million last quarter and 10.75 million last year.
However Radio 1 was slightly down year on year with 10.97 million listeners during the period compared with 11.09 million last year.
There was better news for Radio 1’s Nick Grimshaw whose Breakfast Show arrested an audience decline by adding 700,000 listeners over the quarter to record an audience of 6.29 million. This compares with 5.58 million in the last quarter but is still down on the previous year’s figure of 6.69 million.
BBC director of radio Helen Boaden said: “These figures are wonderful news for the radio industry and Britain’s love affair with radio shows no signs of cooling.
“We are a nation of audiophiles and so, despite the ever-increasing competition for people’s time and the growing range of online audio providers, radio is thriving in the digital age. I’m delighted that the BBC’s distinctive portfolio of stations is proving so enduringly popular and helping the UK radio industry go from strength to strength.”
