Located in an awe-inspiring area of protected coastal beauty on Portugal’s unspoiled western Algarve, Martinhal resort is a fantastic mixture of luxurious comfort and stunning nature.
Each and every inch of this large yet extremely intimate feeling resort has been designed with rest and relaxation in mind – from the beautifully appointed villas and guest rooms to the bars and restaurants, pools, shops and parklands.
A mix of residences, holiday villas and hotel rooms – Martinhal has a real feeling of community about it, making it a welcoming and friendly place to holiday with the family.
I stayed in an Ocean House offering stunning views of the sea, and despite being part of a complex felt very private. With the living area upstairs and the bedrooms downstairs, the apartment, with its balcony and gardens, has been designed to carefully maximise the views on offer.
Within the Ocean House, every inch of the property has been furnished to a very high standard with designer pieces exclusively created by Michael Sodeau making this a modern, comfortable – but also beautiful – place to spend time with your family.
State of the art kitchen facilities sit opposite a fantastic family dining area where you can enjoy breakfast, lunch or even dinner delivered to your apartment – or perhaps prepare food to take out to the balcony to enjoy the sunshine.
And for families with small children, the apartments have been well thought through – with integral stair gates, soft edged furniture and a host of baby equipment and children’s toys available on request.
The resort itself is very well equipped for young families, with regular kids events and a range of swimming pools, play parks, tennis courts and much more to keep the youngsters happy. There is also a crèche facility available for children over 6-months, which allows mum and dad time to use the well-equipped gym or perhaps take a treatment at the rejuvenation spa.
Whatever your requirement, the extremely friendly and welcoming staff will do all they can to help you get the most out of your stay, making you feel at home from the very off.
Whether you have a large family – or like us, have just one small baby – this is the perfect place to get away from it all, be pampered and relax in luxury on one of the most beautiful coastlines in the world.
Eating and drinking
One of the best things about Martinhal is the food. There are three main restaurants, spotted around the resort.
The largest restaurant, O Terraco, is on the first floor of the hotel and offers beautiful sea views while you dine. It’s home to a fantastic buffet style breakfast (complimented by a la carte extras)in the mornings that includes a huge and well-prepared selection of hot and cold foods.
In the evenings the O Terraco becomes a family friendly fine restaurant with brilliantly knowledgeable staff who are more than happy to guide you through the fantastic menu of exquisite local seafood, meats and locally-sourced vegetables – and pair wines to taste.
However, if you’d like to experience the same great food but in the privacy of your own spacious apartment – the restaurant offers a free takeaway service… now that’s a great extra for the family.
As Dunas restaurant specialises in fish and is located just off the beach. Why not relax by candlelight and enjoy the sound of the waves crashing around you as you sample the catch of the day. Next to the restaurant is a fenced-off sandy play area so the kids can enjoy themselves in full view of the parents while they dine.
Os Gambozinos is an Italian restaurant suited for the whole family in the heart of the resort. It is open for lunch and dinner during the high-season and offers another informal and relaxed atmosphere within which to dine.
There are also a number of relaxed bars within the resort, including the surf-style M Bar which also sells light snacks, the beach pool bar, Club 98 and the Village Square Juice Bar which is located close to the resort shop.
Overall, you’re spoilt for choice when it comes to food and drink at Martinhal with each of the restaurants and bars easily living up to the five star standards of the resort overall.
