Golden statues are no doubt being polished as we speak as the nominations for Best Supporting Actor for the Oscars 2014 are in. Here’s what you need to know about those competing and which films caught the Academy’s eye…

NAME: Bradley Cooper

FILM: American Hustle

OSCAR HISTORY: 1 nomination in 2013 for Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role for Silver Linings (2012)

Bradley Cooper’s film catalogue moves effortlessly from comedic turns in The Hangover to playing wild FBI agent Richie DiMaso in American Hustle. The film is jam-packed with talent – including Cooper’s Silver Linings co-star Jennifer Lawrence. But Bradley shines. As would an Oscar statue…

NAME: Michael Fassbender

FILM: 12 Years A Slave

OSCAR HISTORY: This is Fassbender’s first Oscar nomination following a Golden Globe nod for Best Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role for 12 Years A Slave.

Fassbender is hot Hollywood property and has caught the eye of film critics for his role as a brutal plantation owner in 12 Years A Slave. Also featuring Chiwetel Ejiofor, the film itself has been widely praised. Fassbender also lists X-Men and Prometheus among his big-movie hits.

NAME: Jared Leto

FILM: Dallas Buyers Club

OSCAR HISTORY: This is Leto’s first Oscar nomination following a win at this year’s Golden Globes for Best Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role for Dallas Buyers Club.

Leto joined Matthew McConaughey in dramatically changing his appearance for his role as transgender AIDS patient Rayon in Dallas Buyers Club. Leto himself is probably best known for fronting rock group Thirty Seconds to Mars. Other acting credits including Fight Club and American Psycho. A win following his Golden Globes success would make for a very good year indeed for Leto.

NAME: Jonah Hill

FILM: The Wolf of Wall Street

OSCAR HISTORY: 1 nomination in 2012 for Best Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role for Moneyball (2011)

Jonah Hill has teamed up with Leonardo DiCaprio twice in quick succession, playing Bag Head #2 in Django Unchained and now Donnie Azoff in The Wolf of Wall Street. He recently told RadioTimes.com about playing the drug addicted trader – let’s hope he adds an Oscar win to the tale.

NAME: Barkhad Abdi

FILM: Captain Phillips

OSCAR HISTORY: This Oscar nomination follows a Golden Globe nomination for Best Supporting Actor in Captain Phillips

Abdi blasted onto the scene as a Somali pirate in Captain Phillips, starring opposite Hollywood royalty Tom Hanks. The film was a tense retelling of 2009’s real-life hijacking of the Maersk Alabamaevent. Abdi is relatively new to the scene, but a win would certainly propel him up the Hollywood ranks.

The Oscars ceremony takes place on Sunday 2 March
