Splash! 2014: TOWIE’s Gemma Collins and former EastEnder Ricky Groves among stars

First batch of celebrities taking to the diving board with Olympian Tom Daley have been announced - and there’s already been an injury

Celebrity diving challenge Splash! is back this Saturday and the first celebrities braving the diving board have been announced.

Stripping down to their swim suits and plunging into the pool will be TOWIE’s Gemma Collins, TV presenter Michaela Strachan, Diversity dancer Perri Kiely, Hollyoaks actress Gemma Merna and former EastEnders star Ricky Groves.

Yes, while we’re just getting our heads around the fact that it’s 2014, these celebrities will be attempting to master the art of diving. From spinning, twisting and flipping to generally avoiding belly flops, they must try and perfect various different types of dives.

Ironically this involves trying to make as little splash as possible, but the second series is probably too late to mention this little detail.

Of course the celebrities aren’t being left at the top of the diving board to just give it a go. They will be getting help from Olympic medalist Tom Daley. He’ll be there to talk them through it, make it look really easy, try not to laugh… no he won’t laugh. He’s a professional. We’ll laugh, confident we’ll never be trying the same thing with any cameras around. It’s a viewer’s prerogative.

The judges will be there to give their verdict. Olympic diver Leon Taylor, Team GB coach Andy Banks and comedienne Jo Brand make up the panel. Plus Vernon Kay and Gabby Logan will be back doing their presenting bit, a good safe distance from the water no doubt.

Yet while the show is yet to begin, there’s already been news of an injury. The Saturdays singer Una Foden has broken her little toe. The star, who revealed she was taking part in the show on Twitter, admitted it was the “poorest excuse for a moan” adding “boy does it hurt”.

There’ll be ‘splash-offs’ as celebrities compete to stay in the competition and we can vote for who we want to see head into the next round.

Splash! returns Saturday 4th January, 7:20pm on ITV1
