Matt Smith and the Daleks at Buckingham Palace for Doctor Who 50th anniversary reception – pictures

Jenna Coleman, Steven Moffat, John Hurt, Tom Baker and Peter Davison all attended the special event hosted by Sophie, Countess of Wessex

Most people have to wait until they reach a century to receive congratulations from Buckingham Palace, but not the Doctor. He had a special reception at the Queen’s residence earlier today, hosted by the Countess of Wessex, to celebrate Doctor Who’s 50 year anniversary.

Time Lords past and present were in attendance, including current Doctor Matt Smith and fourth and fifth incarnations Tom Baker and Peter Davison, who can be seen chatting to the Countess – a self-confessed Whovian.

Also present at the royal bash were current companion Jenna Coleman, former sidekick Catherine Tate, showrunner Steven Moffat (who also celebrates his 52nd birthday today) and mysterious new Time Lord John Hurt. And a Doctor Who party wouldn’t be complete without Daleks and a Tardis, would it?

Doctor Who marks its 50th anniversary on Saturday 23 November with a special feature-length episode The Day of the Doctor, which will see Smith join forces with tenth Doctor, David Tennant.

The special broadcast – also featuring Billie Piper, Jenna Coleman and John Hurt – will air at 7:50pm on BBC1 and will be available to watch in 3D in selected cinemas and simulcast to countries around the world.
