I’m A Celeb 2013: Joe Swash wants Paul Gascoigne and Tulisa – but Jedward would be first on the fire

Former King of the Jungle and I'm A Celebrity... Get Me Out Of Here! NOW! co-host says you need characters who will ignite drama in the camp and has "no sympathy" as he admits bushtucker trials will get tougher

Former EastEnders star and 2008’s King of the Jungle Joe Swash is back for this year’s ITV2 spin-off I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here! NOW! and already has a few ideas on which celebrities would, and wouldn’t, be good choices for this year’s show.

On who would be the ideal campmate Joe tells RadioTimes.com, “Gazza. Paul Gascoigne. A fit and healthy Paul Gascoigne would be good. But he’d have to be fit and healthy. Mentally it’s really hard so he’d have to be mentally right.”

Joe says he hasn’t been surprised by the celebrities who are rumoured to be joining the show this year. “Every year there’s a whole turnstyle of names in the hat and some of them just pop up. Like Tulisa, because she’s lost the X Factor gig and stuff like that.”

Tulisa has herself denied that she’s heading Down Under for a stint in the jungle, but Joe says, “It’d be nice to have her in there. Characters like that. Anyone that the public is interested in is fine by us.”

Of course, not everyone would have the success Joe had in the jungle. “I think Jedward would be the first put on the fire when people got hungry, that’d be the first choice,” Joe jokes of the former X Factor double act.

For the celebrities who do eventually find themselves dropped in the Australian jungle Joe says things are going to be tougher – and that’s fine by him.

“I think the last couple of years it’s been hard, but they’re going to crank it up slightly this year, which I think is good. Just to make them suffer a bit more. For our entertainment – for your entertainment. I have no sympathy really.

“I should have some sympathy really shouldn’t I? But I’m quite up for it being tough,” grins Joe.

Yet regardless of how hard the tasks are, it’s the action around the camp that’s the most entertaining according to Joe, who will continue to host with presenter Laura Whitmore and comedian Rob Beckett.

“The bushtucker trials are hard, they’re gruelling, it’s good to watch as a viewer. But most of the drama will come from around the camp, people just living on top of each other, winding each other up. You always have those certain characters that will ignite it. David Van Day or David Gest – the littlest thing will start them off with the biggest row, which is always interesting to watch.”

If Joe were to head back in to the camp does he think he could scoop the crown again? “No, not at all. Not at all. I’m far grumpier than I was when I was in there. My year was perfect for me. I wouldn’t have changed my lot for the world.”

I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here! and Get Me Out Of Here! NOW! returns on 17 November 17 on ITV and ITV2
