As Doctor Who celebrates its 50th anniversary, young fans are being given the chance to become part of that illustrious history, via a Blue Peter competition challenging them to design a futuristic gadget that will be used by one of the show’s characters.
Viewers will be asked to send in their ideas for a new piece of sonic hardware for one of The Doctor’s sometime companions Madame Vastra, Jenny Flint or Sontaran Commander Strax, with the winning design to be featured in the forthcoming eighth series of Doctor Who.
The competition launches during the Doctor Who: Blue Peter Special on Thursday 21 November on the CBBC channel, and will invite entries in three age categories – six to eight years, nine to 11 years and 12 to 15 years.
The high-tech tools will be considered by a panel of judges including Doctor Who head writer Steven Moffat and production designer Michael Pickwoad, the man responsible for the recent Tardis control room revamp.
Winners will be announced as part of Blue Peter’s Christmas show on 19 December, with one chosen designer heading to Cardiff to see their gadget being used on the Doctor Who set, while three runners up will each receive a framed picture featuring their entry and a signed photo of the actor they designed it for.
Competition details will be live on the Blue Peter website following the launch on 21 November.
Blue Peter editor Ewan Vinnicombe said: “Blue Peter and Doctor Who have collaborated many times over the history of both series and we felt that the 50th anniversary was a great opportunity to celebrate that and give our young viewers the chance to use their imagination and really get involved in the show. We can’t wait to see what great ideas they come up with for the new devices and to see them in action on the Doctor Who set.”
