Homeland survives for a fourth series

The US conspiracy thriller will be back for another season - whether the same is true for all its main characters remains to be seen

Conspiracy thriller Homeland will return for a fourth series.

The CIA drama, which stars Damian Lewis and Claire Danes, has been renewed for another 12 episodes by American network Showtime.

Whether the entire cast will live to see another season, though, remains to be seen. Homeland is known for its high body count, with the end of season two dispatching a number of major characters.

With series three currently still on air, plot details for the fourth run are unlikely to emerge for a while but Showtime’s entertainment president David Nevins said: “Homeland continues to prove its strength for Showtime and is one of television’s most exciting, provocative and widely discussed shows. It has grown its audience significantly in each of its three seasons.”

Homeland’s third series, which has so far seen Carrie admitted to a psychiatric ward while Brody is on the run, started in the UK on Channel 4 earlier this month. The opening episode pulled in 1.9m viewers.

Homeland continues on Sundays at 9pm on Channel 4
