Despite all those sweet treats, baking can be surprisingly bitter. Great British Bake Off finalist Ruby Tandoh has come in for her share of inchoate rage from back-seat bakers on Twitter already – and now even legendary chef Raymond Blanc is beating up on her.
The Michelin-starred chef tweeted that the show had “not much skills, female tears” and made reference to a contestant “so thin who makes me doubt of her love for great cooking, baking (sic)”.
Ruby somehow held back the “female tears” that must have been swelling in her eyes and, despite her frail frame, hit back:
In the tweet, Blanc also seemed to reveal the winner of the competition. (Link with potential spoilers.) This annoyed Bake Off’s own silverback Paul Hollywood, who stepped in to protect his territory.
Someone hide the rolling pins, or eggs won’t be the only thing getting beaten.
Blanc has now backed off his claim to know the winner.
So, apologies to his Twitter followers for spoiling their favourite show (possibly – he may well not know who has won), but nothing for Ruby. Even he can’t make humble pie taste good.
The Great British Bake Off final airs tomorrow on BBC2
