Great British Bake Off’s Mary Berry: My granddaughter thought I lived in Waitrose

Ah, bless!

We’d always assumed that Mary Berry lived in a cottage made of sponge cake with an icing roof, an angelica front lawn and a fence made from sponge fingers, but it seems her granddaughter has other ideas.

During a recent session at The Cheltenham Literature Festival, the Great British Bake Off judge described a conversation that took place after she had given a talk at the youngster’s primary school.

“The teacher Miss Slade said [to my granddaughter] ‘Now Abby, your granny was here earlier… where does your granny live?’

“And Abby looked up at her and she said ‘I’m not quite sure, but I think she lives in Waitrose.’”

Other supermarkets are, of course, available but we have to admit Mary’s granddaughter may have a point – after all, we wouldn’t expect to bump into her in Iceland…
