Do producers with ulterior motives ever “lean on” Great British Bake Off judges Mary Berry and Paul Hollywood during their decision-making, Berry was asked at a session at the Cheltenham Literature festival this weekend.
“No!” she replied firmly, “that’s why it’s successful, I think, because it’s totally honest.”
The interviewer had wondered whether people behind the scenes might be keen to maintain a baking battle of the sexes as the series edged towards the finale of the BBC2 contest each year, but as Berry was quick to point out, the evidence doesn’t support that suggestion.
“The last time, we had all men in the final,” she said. “This time we have four girls in the semi-final.
“It’s totally honest – the decision is Paul and me.”
