Karen Gillan: I am NOT in Doctor Who 50th Anniversary special

The former companion quashes rumours of an appearance in Day of the Doctor, and discusses the Scottish takeover of the Tardis

Doctor Who fans can stop fantasising: Karen Gillan will not be in the 50th Anniversary special. Speaking to RadioTimes.com, the former companion finally stamped on rumours that Amy and Rory Pond would be appearing in The Day of the Doctor.

The 50th anniversary will unite Matt Smith and Jenna Colman with former Tardis-travellers David Tennant and Billie Piper, fuelling speculation that Gillan might make a surprise appearance. Alas, it is not to be:

“I’m not in it, just to put that out there,” said Gillan.

David Tennant and Doctor-in-waiting Peter Capaldi are both Scottish, as is Doctor Who supremo Stephen Moffat. The odd one out was Matt Smith, Karen’s Doctor.

“I got the English one,” says Gillan. “That’s funny, I’ve never thought of that before. I did get to work on one episode of Doctor Who with David Tennant, even though I was not playing the companion then. Also Peter Capaldi was in that episode: what was going on in the Fires of Pompeii [the episode in question]?”

So what are her plans for the 50th anniversary special?

“I’m going to watch it!”

“I think I’m going to be in America, so I’ll probably round up all the people who like to watch Doctor Who in the area. We’ll probably watch it and drink PG Tips and eat Jammy Dodgers, if I can get them.”

Not Another Happy Ending releases in cinemas today. The Day of the Doctor will be broadcast worldwide 23rd November.
