Strictly Come Dancing’s Craig Revel Horwood to have hip replacement in the middle of current series

"I’ll be in hospital for four days, I’ll come out on the Friday, do a bit of Stairmaster training so I can get up to Tess’s box because I’m worried about that"

After a 20-year career as a dancer and choreographer, it was reported last month that Craig Revel Horwood would be having a hip replacement next February, aged just 48.

But speaking last night at the Cheltenham Literature Festival, the Strictly Come Dancing judge revealed that the operation would in fact be taking place in just two weeks – months ahead of the date previously reported and right in the middle of the current eleventh series.

“I’m having it done in two weeks so I’ll be made of titanium, darling, and I can’t wait,” he told the audience. “I’m having it done on the Sunday at six in the morning after Saturday night live so I’ll be there on Sunday night watching myself on the telly with my old hip but I’ll have a new one in.”

Revel Horwood went on to speak about the amount of discomfort his hip has been causing him. “I can’t wait because I’ve been in terrible pain so it’ll be really nice to get back to normal and it’s amazing now what they can do. I’m looking forward to having that done so I can dance again because I really am limited at the moment and I want it to be better for panto.”

And if you’re worried about Strictly’s Mr Nasty being absent for a large chunk of the current series then don’t be – he doesn’t intend to miss a single show. “I’ll be in hospital for four days, I’ll come out on the Friday, do a bit of Stairmaster training so I can get up to Tess’s box because I’m worried about that and then just sit there doing the show.”

But Craig isn’t the only Stricly star suffering ill health. Co-host Bruce Forsyth was absent from last week’s live show after suffering from a bout of flu. There is no word yet on whether he will be appearing on-screen with Tess Daly this Saturday, but the 85-year-old is already scheduled to miss a further three shows – amounting to nearly a third of this year’s series.
