Matt Smith is to play the crazed narcissistic killer Patrick Bateman in a musical version of Brett Easton Ellis’ American Psycho.
Smith will take on the role made famous by Christian Bale in the 2000 film, at London’s Almeida Theatre for a run which opens on December 3. He is understood to have just started rehearsals today.
The new musical, written by Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa and Duncan Sheik, will open just after Smith’s penultimate appearance as the Doctor in the 50th anniversary episode on November 23. His final appearance will be in the Christmas special.
American Psycho follows the story of Bateman, a ‘Yuppie’ financier who embarks on a gruesome killing spree in New York.
It will not be Smith’s first appearance on stage, with other credits including That Face at the Royal Court and in the West End as well as the National Theatre plays On the Shore of the Wide World, Burn, Citizenship, Chatroom and The History Boys.
Smith will also son appear opposite Christina Hendricks and Eva Mendes in the film How To Catch A Monster written and directed by Ryan Gosling.
He recently made his directorial debut earlier this year with Cargese, a short film for Sky Arts.
