This chap looks a little familiar, right? He’s standing in the middle of a desert, wearing specs, brandishing a gun and yes, there’s a glimpse of those distinctive white underpants. Meet Walter Blanco – Walter White’s Colombian reincarnation and the star of Breaking Bad’s Mexican remake Metastasis.
Any fans suffering withdrawal symptoms from the show’s recent finale will be delighted to hear that not much has changed as Sony and Colombian producer Teleset aim to hook in a new market of Breaking Bad addicts with the story of Walter, his partner Jose (Jess), wife Cielo (Skyler) and brother-in-law Henry Navarro (Hank).
Although Sony’s Angelica Guerra did let slip a minor tweak to fit the show’s new audience… “Motor homes are not popular in Colombia,” she said, “so audiences will see Walter and Jose cooking up their first several batches of methamphetamine in an old, barely drivable school bus.”
“Breaking Bad is a fantastic series that wasn’t widely seen in Latin America, partly because cable doesn’t yet have full penetration in the region,” she added. “[But] there is a universality to the story and its characters that we recognised could work very well.”
Metastasis (a reference to metastasizing cancer from which Walt suffers) will be shown to all major Spanish-speaking markets across Latin America and is currently the only foreign version of the show in the works.
