Martin Freeman stars in new poster for The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug

Freeman will appear alongside his Sherlock co-star Benedict Cumberbatch in the second film in Peter Jackson's trilogy

As Friday 13 December inches ever closer, the cast of The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug have appeared in a shiny new poster to promote the second instalment of Peter Jackson’s blockbuster trilogy.

Led by Martin Freeman as Bilbo Baggins – the titular hobbit who accompanies a merry band of dwarves to reclaim their mountain home from Smaug the dragon (played by Freeman’s Sherlock co-star Benedict Cumberbatch) – the new artwork appears to picture a scene lifted directly from chapter eight of the book, entitled Flies and Spiders.

Depicting the moment Bilbo and the dwarves are captured by giant arachnids, the latest poster shows the worried-looking gang steeling themselves once again to fight their way out of trouble.

The poster comes with the even more exciting news that a new trailer will be released this afternoon. The first footage of the movie debuted in June, but eager fans will no doubt be hoping to see more of Cumerbatch’s dragon, Smaug, when the latest trailer is introduced.
