SpongeBob SquarePants 2 will shoot in Georgia

Antonio Banderas will head to the southern state next week to film a sequel to the hit movie

Live action scenes from the sequel of hit movie SpongeBob SquarePants will take place this month in Savannah, Georgia.

Based on the extremely popular Nickelodeon television series, the first animated SpongeBob film made £87 million at the box office.

Antonio Banderas will play a pirate in the new SpongeBob SquarePants movie, alongside the series’ main cast Bill Fagerbakke, Tom Kenny, Clancy Brown, Rodger Bumpass and Carolyn Lawrence.

Created by marine biologist and animator Stephen Hillenburg, SpongeBob SquarePants follows a cheerful sea sponge on a series of nonsensical escapades with his sea creature buddies. The wacky cartoon show sees him living in a two-story pineapple and socialising with his starfish friend Patrick.

Filming for the second film is rumoured to take place on Tybee Island and around downtown Savannah from September 30 to October 9.

SpongeBob SquarePants 2  is due for release in 2015.
