The Britain's Got Talent judge will voice the dancing pup in a heartwarming family film set for release next year

That David Walliams certainly has a penchant for playing unusual characters. We’ve seen him as an adult baby and a miniature Dennis Waterman (to name but a few) on Little Britain and as a cowardly alien in Doctor Who. But a dog…?

Yes, the 42-year-old comedy actor is set to appear as Britain’s Got Talent star Pudsey in a new movie. But don’t you worry, this new role won’t actually involve Walliams donning a dog suit, he’ll just be voicing the pooch, while Pudsey will play the film’s hero – himself.

Walliams, who was a judge on Britain’s Got Talent when dancing dog Pudsey first found fame, said: “I am thrilled to be providing the voice of Pudsey. I have been coming up with different voices for him ever since that first audition.”

Live action film Pudsey: The Movie will follow a cheeky stray dog (called Pudsey) who is happy being a lone ranger until he meets a band of friends and realises what he’s been missing. Jessica Hynes, John Sessions, Luke Neal, Izzy Meikle-Smith and Luke Tittensor will also star in the hearmwarming movie.

From the kennels of Northamptonshire to the bright lights of the film set, loveable pup Pudsey rose to stardom via ITV’s hit talent show Britain’s Got Talent alongside his owner Ashleigh Butler.

The movie is currently being filmed on location in England and is expected for release in May 2014
