X Factor: Five hilarious week one auditions – in pictures

From underpants to ghostly voices to Dermot O’Leary providing the lyrics to a classic Whitney Houston song, X Factor’s opening auditions were as bonkers as ever

The X Factor first auditions are back and as brilliantly bizarre as ever. This weekend’s bumper crop of shows switched rapidly between the spine-tingling – like prison officer Sam Bailey’s rendition of Beyonce’s Listen – and the wonderfully wacky, such as waiter Christian’s decision to perform without his trousers.

Here’s our top moments, in pictures…

J Star Valentine

Armed with his stage name J Star Valentine – “The ‘J’ stands for Junior, the Star because I have the star quality in me” – the 19-year-old model tried his hand at singing Leonard Cohen’s Hallelujah. His rubbery facial expressions and strange howling didn’t cut the mustard. “You sang that song like a ghost” said a shocked Sharon Osbourne, before Gary Barlow mocked, “You need three yes-es-es-essssses to get through.” He got four no-o-os instead.

Fil with an F

Wannabe rock star, Fil (With An F, to give him his full name) arrived armed with his double Gloucester cheese sandwiches, made by his mum, and his perfectly coiffed mullet, and opted to sing that classic hard rock athem, Robbie Williams’s Let Me Entertain You. Fil wandered around playing his guitar and popping his head out from behind the X Factor X. Even Take That’s Gary Barlow succeeded in out-rock-starring him, lobbing his mug on the floor and gently tipping his chair over. Ozzy Osbourne would have been proud.

Christian

Arriving in his Superman-style red pants and not a whole lot more on the bottom half, Christian no doubt prompted many a switch over from HD. Chrisian describied himself as already famous. Sharon asked, “What are you famous for? That big package?” We all choked on our tea.

Tamera Foster

Having been split from her original audition partner Jerrie, 16-year-old Tamera Foster took to the Wembley stage as a solo act. Louis Walsh marked Tamera out as having more potential than former X Factor champions Leona Lewis and Alexandra Burke. There’s no doubt about it, Tamera can sing. But the best part of the entire audition was seeing Dermot O’Leary step up to the plate and provide Tamera with the next line of Whitney Houston’s I Have Nothing.

Fil with an F… was back

It’s official. Water has been thrown. The X Factor has truly returned to our screens. This time it wasn’t an irritated Sharon showering Louis with her refreshments. It was returning wannabe rocker Fil getting a watery round of applause from Gary. It wasn’t enough to get Fil through to Bootcamp though and he squelched off with his ‘I heart Gary Barlow’ temporary tattoo running down his back.

The X Factor continues on Saturday and Sunday at 8pm on ITV
