It may be in its fourteenth series in the UK (and its third on Channel 5), but it seems the punters still love a hearty dose of the general public doing nothing as quite literally millions flocked to Channel 5 last night to watch Sam Evans crowned BB champ.

The Big Brother finale, which was positioned either side of the UK premiere of  big-hitting US drama Under the Dome, attracted a whopping 2.1m viewers (9.5% share) between 9pm and 10pm, with 1.6m (14.5% share) tuning in again between 10:55pm and 11:35pm to find out the winner.

The bumper numbers are up on last year’s final which only achieved 1.5m (6.9% share), and will give a boost to Channel 5 execs who’ll be hoping for even bigger things from the next series of CBB, which is due to land later this week. Rumoured contestants for that three-weeks of fun include (Big) Ron Atkinson… AND Charlotte from Geordie Shore!

C5 will also be encouraged by a good start to US imported drama Under the Dome, which sees Breaking Bad star Dean Norris swap policing for being a small-town dictator in a new mysterious thriller based on a Stephen King novel.

The glossy drama opened on C5 with 2m viewers between 10pm and 10:55pm, a 11.8% share of everyone watching television at that time. Whether this will continue when it no longer sits between two slices of ratings-bait BB final bread remains to be seen.
