Big Brother final: Can Twitter predict the winner?

The 2013 champion is set to be crowned tonight and while there are five contestants left in the house, according to Twitter and Facebook there are only two in the running...

Gina Rio, Dexter Koh, Sam Evans, Charlie Travers, Jack & Jo Glenny – with five finalists left in the Big Brother house, you’d think the race would still be wide open. But according to social media there are two big favourites, for two very different reasons…

Gina Rio storms ahead with the most mentions of all the housemates, racking up 75,000 tweets or Facebook posts across the series.

Yet, while Gina’s the hot topic and has remained pretty entertaining throughout, teaming up with so-called ‘hated Hazel’ against Charlie in recent evictions saw her positivity rating drop dramatically, and all together she’s received as many negative mentions as she has positive (nearly 14,000 apiece). And despite all that, the majority of posts relating to Gina simply fall into the ‘neutral’ category.

Still, if all those people who’ve had good things to say about Gina were to pick up the phone and vote, she could be comfortably crowned this year’s champion.

Meanwhile, softy Sam Evans may have pulled in just 33,789 mentions, (less than half as many as Gina) but he’s been associated with the word ‘win’ more times on social media than any other housemate.

So, while Gina’s had more positive posts, those talking about Sam tend see him as a winner.

Will Sam be victorious? Has Gina done enough? Or will one of the other housemates take home the cash prize, proving that social media is not yet an exact science…?
