Ben Stiller flies out of a window, jumps out of a helicopter and gets hit in the face by a branch in the first trailer for The Secret Life of Walter Mitty.
But the 47-year-old comedy actor’s new film is actually a million miles away from the slapstick-happy movies we are used to seeing him in. The Secret Life of Walter Mitty sees Stiller take on the role of a timid everyday guy who is too shy to ask out his pretty co-worker (played by Kristen Wiig). As his mundane life continues around him, Walter embarks on elaborate day dreams as his heroic alter-ego. That is, until a real life adventure comes knocking…
The new flick, which is also directed and produced by Stiller, is based on a short story by James Thurber, which was published in The New Yorker during the 1930s. The original story followed mild-mannered Walter as a shopping trip with his wife was interrupted by five heroic daydreams which see him pilot a US Navy boat during a storm, perform a live-saving surgery, testify in a court room as an assassin, volunteer for a secret suicide mission as an RAF pilot and face a firing squad.
The tale was first turned into a film in 1947, starring Danny Kaye and Virginia Mayo. The film saw Walter as a young editor at a publishing company who daydreams to escape the people in his life but ends up being part of a real life adventure. Here’s the trailer for the original, lavish laughs, gorgeous gals and all. Looks a bit different, doesn’t it?!
The Secret Life of Walter Mitty will be in UK cinemas on 26 December
