It’s one of TV’s most coveted roles and ever since Matt Smith announced his imminent departure, it’s been up for grabs. But while it seems like every young male actor in the country has been linked to play the Doctor, there’s been plenty of speculation that we’re about to seen a woman in the role for the very first time.
Rumours have repeatedly mentioned Helen Mirren and Zawe Ashton, but a former Corrie actress has become the latest to throw her name into the hat.
“Will they ever let us have a female Doctor Who?” she asks the new issue of Radio Times. “I don’t know. I think they should.” Not exactly a pitch for the role, but not a denial, either. “Well, you’re saying it, not me,” she continues. “You’re Radio Times, you’ve got the power. You could just do a front cover with me as Doctor Who – and then it would have to happen, wouldn’t it?”
