In pictures: Red Bull Soap Box Race

Thousands of people turned out to see a scotch egg and a coffin-shaped car zoom around a 430m track and dodge obstacles in London…

Red Bull’s bonkers soapbox racing event saw 70 teams in inventive creations – like Usain Bolt, burrito, and Lego-shaped cars – race around a 430m course at speeds of 32mph and smash into each other, roll and slide while 20,000 people cheered on the sidelines at London’s Alexandra Palace.

There were a series of obstacles on the day at, which teams had to avoid breaking down at, including the Big Air jump.

Before judge Christian Horner did his soapbox run around the track he said: “No-one told me there were jumps… I might need to change my underwear!”

Team Spit-Phya and their The Phya-Bird from Newcastle-Upon-Tyne came in first place while the Coffin Dodgers from London came second in their grizzly wooden box, and Does My Scrum Look Big in This, from Barnet, came third in their Rugby-themed soapbox.

“That was the scariest thing I have ever done in my life!” concluded Horner.
