Karen Gillan set to play space pirate in Guardians of the Galaxy

The former Doctor Who companion will be playing a villain in the upcoming Marvel flick from director James Gunn

Forget saving the human race and snogging the Doctor, former Who companion Karen Gillan is set to have a much more menacing role in her new film Guardians of the Galaxy.

The 25-year-old Gillan, who played Amy Pond in the hit BBC drama, has been cast a villanous space pirate called Nebula in the new Marvel Comics flick.

She will play alongside Lee Pace and Benicio del Toro who will star as comic characters Ronan the Accuser and The Collector respectively, reports Den of Geek.

Gillan departed Doctor Who last year alongside co-star and on-screen husband Arthur Darvill, and passed the baton over to new companion Jenna Coleman.

Thanks to the time-travelling teatime show, Karen has has some swashbuckling experience. She helped the Doctor investigate whereabouts of missing crew on board a 17th century pirate ship in Doctor Who episode The Curse of the Black Spot.

Guardians of the Galaxy also stars Star Trek Into Darkness’ Zoe Saldana and Parks and Recreations’ Chris Pratt. The Marvel film is based on the story of an American pilot who goes on the run with a group of futuristic ex-cons. This will be Gillan’s fourth feature film since departing Doctor Who – she is also involved in Oculus and The List as well as Not Another Happy Ending.
