Forget remote controls and ad breaks, when it comes to new films and TV, sometimes the best place to go is the internet. And with brand new original content and VOD exclusives, this is a great week to dip your toe in the water of On Demand.


All 13 episodes of Netflix’s latest Original Series, Orange is The New Black, drop this week while over on blinkbox you can get your hands on the third series of Game of Thrones months before it’s available anywhere else. When it comes to new films, there’s Oscar nominee Beasts of the Southern Wild, Due Date, Captain America: The First Avenger AND Jack the Giant Slayer. Plus you can watch the first episode of Sky Atlantic’s new US series Ray Donovan.

Ray Donovan – available from 10 July

Have a sneaky peek at the opening episode of new drama Ray Donovan one week before it airs on Sky Atlantic. The glossy US series, starring Liev Schreiber and Jon Voight, follows a professional ‘fixer’ to the rich and famous (Schreiber) who starts to face his own problems when his father Mickey is unexpectedly released from prison. 

Across the pond, Ray Donovan has just broken Showtime’s records and become the network’s biggest premiere ever, so it’s probably worth a watch!

Orange is the New Black – available 11 July

Ever worried that your rebellious phase might catch up with you?

Following on from the likes of Arrested Development and Hemlock Grove, Orange is the New Black is Netflix’s latest Original Series. Based on the memoirs of Piper Kerman, the 13-episode series sees Piper (played by Taylor Schilling) sentenced to serve fifteen months in prison for a crime she committed years earlier when she was experimenting with her sexuality with an international drug smuggler.

The series has already been renewed for a second series despite the fact that it’s yet to be released – so Netflix must be confident that it’s got the makings of a hit.

Beasts of the Southern Wild – available from 11 July

Fantasy film Beasts of the Southern Wild follows five-year-old Hushpuppy and her father Wink as a storm approaches their Louisiana community of Bathtub.

The film was nominated for four Oscars earlier this year, including one for nine-year-old Quvenzhane Wallis, making her the youngest Best Actress nominee in history.

Beasts of the Southern Wild is available on LOVEFiLM Instant.

Game of Thrones – available 15 July

Have you missed out on series three of Game of Thrones? For those of you without Sky subscriptions, as well as you super-fans who just can’t wait to re-watch the epic drama, blinkbox has come to the rescue.

The third series of HBO’s hit fantasy series Game of Thrones lands on blinkbox this week, months ahead of its DVD and Blu-ray release. So you can catch up with the Starks, find out what Daenerys Targaryen is up to and keep an eye on the Lannisters. Yay!

Game of Thrones series three is available exclusively on blinkbox before it goes to DVD.

Jack The Giant Slayer – available from 15 July

Oh how Nicholas Hoult has grown… Gone are the days of him following Hugh Grant around in About A Boy. He’s even outgrown his drug-fueled teen years in Skins. Nowadays he’s fighting giants instead.

Jack the Giant Slayer is a twist on the classic fairytale and stars Ewan McGregor, Stanley Tucci, Bill Nighy and Warwick Davis.

Captain American: The First Avenger – available from 16 July

Set during the Second World War, Captain America: The First Avenger follows Steve Rogers, a sickly man from Brooklyn who is rejected for military duty because of various health problems.

When he persists, Roger is drafted into a top secret experimental project where he is transformed into a super soldier dedicated to defending the USA.

A sequel to The First Avenger, which stars Chris Evans, Hayley Atwell, Tommy Lee Jones, Hugo Weaving, Dominic Cooper, Samuel L Jackson and Stanley Tucci, is set for release in 2014.
