Artist makes Barbie an average-sized woman

The project is intended to raise awareness about body image among teenage women

She may appear to be the most innocent of children’s toys, but Barbie has long been criticised for distorting teenage perceptions of body image. Now, thanks to a Barbie created using the dimensions of the average woman, we can see what she should really look like.

Made by artist Nickolay Lamm, the normal-sized model is designed to the measurements from the average 19-year-old American woman, provided by the Centre for Disease Control and Prevention Lamm then put the two Barbies together to show the differences between them.

He said: “If we criticise skinny models, we should at least be open to the possibility that Barbie may negatively influence young girls as well. Furthermore, a realistically proportioned Barbie actually looks pretty good in the pictures I produced.”

“So, if there’s even a small chance of Barbie in its present form negatively influencing girls and if Barbie looks good as an average-sized woman in America, what’s stopping Mattel from making one?”
