Sold! A lock of Mick Jagger’s hair’s a snip at a mere £4,000

And rumour has it Jagger himself may have been the mystery buyer at today's Bonhams auction

A lock of Mick Jagger’s hair from the 1960’s has today sold for £4,000 at London auction house Bonhams.

The hair, which was cut by relatives of the Rolling Stones frontman’s ex-girlfriend Chrissie Shrimpton and kept by her in a drawer for nearly 50 years, fetched more than twice the initial £1,500 and £2,000 guide price.

It was bought by an anonymous private bidder, fuelling specualtion that it may have been Jagger himself. it has been claimed that he fiercely guards his privacy and it is thought that his hair could be used in any future DNA paternity tests.

Jagger and Shrimpton dated for three years while he was a student at the London School for Economics and lived with her and bandmate Keith Richards in north London. At the time she was a receptionist in Covent Garden.

They had been engaged before he finished the relationship in 1966 and the Stones songs Under My Thumb and Stupid Girl are said to have been inspired by their time together.

Money raised by yesterday’s sale will be donated to charity Changing Faces, which supports people with facial disfigurements.

The sum far exceeded the recent £900 auction sale for a lock of Keith Richards’ hair which had been cut by 16-year-old fan Maggie Richardson in the Stones’ dressing room in Preston, Lancashire, in 1964.
