Maggie Gyllenhaal to play British peer in BBC2 drama

Dark Knight and Secretary star to play Jewish businesswoman in thriller from British writer/director Hugo Blick

The Dark Knight star Maggie Gyllenhaal is to feature in a BBC2 thriller centred around the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

Gyllenhaal will play a British life peer called Nessa Stein in The Honourable Woman, the latest project from Hugo Blick, the creator of the hit BBC2 thriller The Shadow Line.

In the new drama Gyllenhaal’s character becomes embroiled in the murky world international espionage following the murder of a Palestinian businessman.

She said of the new role, which she begins filming next month in London: “I couldn’t put the scripts down. Nessa is such an exciting and intricate character. I can’t wait to begin filming.”

The news reflects the current vogue for casting big US stars in British dramas. BBC2 viewers have just seen X Files star Gillian Anderson in serial killer drama The Fall and Elisabeth Moss – Mad Men’s Peggy Olson –  will play a police detective in Jane Campion’s New Zealand-set thriller Top of the Lake later this summer.

Both The Honourable Woman and Top of the Lake are co-productions with Robert Redford’s Sundance Channel.
