Fifty Shades of Grey movie gets a release date

The film adaptation of EL James's racy bestseller will be released in cinemas on 1 August 2014 with Sam Taylor-Johnson on board to direct

2014 is set to be a summer of steamy romance as Fifty Shades of Grey is handed an official release date. Friday 1 August has been unveiled as the day the movie adaptation of EL James’s erotic novel will begin showing in cinemas after Focus and Universal paid $5 million for the movie rights to the best-selling trilogy back in March.

Universal chairman Adam Fogelson had already labelled the film an “absolute priority” which explains the project’s quick turnaround as scores of women worldwide await the silver screen incarnation of the romantic tryst between Christian Grey and Anastasia Steele.

The film will be adapted by Kelly Marcel (Terra Nova) and directed by Sam Taylor-Wood but there has been no confirmation so far as to who will play the two leads. But there has been plenty of speculation. Over 23,000 readers have had their say in our poll, with Matt Bomer (White Collar) currently leading the vote to portray Christian Grey, closely followed by Man of Steel’s Henry Cavill. As it stands, Game of Thrones actress Emilia Clarke is frontrunner to play Anastasia Steele with Alexis Bledel your second choice for the role.
