Sopranos sales surge following death of James Gandolfini

The classic HBO series hits the top of the DVD and download charts

The sudden death on Wednesday of James Gandolfini, star of US drama series The Sopranos, has sent the show to the top of the UK’s DVD and download charts.

Gandolfini, who suffered a fatal heart attack while on holiday in Rome, starred in the massively acclaimed HBO series from 1999 until 2007, when the final season aired.

The full Sopranos box set, featuring all 86 episodes across six seasons, is now at number one in the Amazon UK and US DVD charts, with the season one download at the top of the iTunes TV section.

Despite commanding great respect on both sides of the Atlantic and winning numerous awards in the States, The Sopranos was still niche viewing to an extent: it aired on subscription cable channel HBO in the US and was shown late at night on C4 in the UK.
