Robert Downey Jr isn’t hanging up his arc reactor just yet – he’s signed up to play Iron Man in the next two Avengers movies.
While a fourth instalment of a solo Iron Man film doesn’t seem likely following various comments from Downey Jr and his co-star Gwyneth Paltrow, the actor will reprise his role as billionaire playboy Tony Stark, alongside familiar superheroes The Hulk, Captain America, Thor and Black Widow.
Marvel announced the news on its website, revealing that The Avengers 2 will hit screens in 2015.
Writer and director Joss Whedon remains at the helm, and it’s been suggested new characters will join the superhero mash up. It’s likely they’ll be known from comic books, but it’ll be the first time they’ve had a spot on the big screen.
This is welcome news for fans and no doubt Marvel’s bank manager, after the first Avengers movie racked up a $1.5billion fortune in global ticket sales.
Fellow Avengers stars Chris Evans, Chris Hemsworth, Scarlett Johansson and Mark Ruffalo are also set to return to the franchise, although there’s been no word on whether Paltrow will star alongside Downey Jr as Tony Stark’s girlfriend Pepper Potts.
