He may not be the Doctor for much longer, and his Hollywood career is well under way, but Matt Smith, who’s currently in Detroit shooting a movie with Ryan Gosling, has not forgotten the Doctor Who fans who made him a star.

In a new video message, the actor sent out a thank you to co-stars Karen Gillan, Arthur Darvill and Jenna-Louise Coleman, along with showrunner Steven “my mate Moff” Moffat – but he reserved special praise for the fans of the BBC sci-fi blockbuster, whose support on his “marvellous journey” Smith described as “unique”.

Smith is set to shoot his final scenes for Doctor Who in the autumn, with his regeneration to be included in the show’s 2013 Christmas special. The announcement of his replacement is expected in late summer.
