Saoirse Ronan and Gemma Arterton star as vampires in dark fantasy thriller Byzantium.
But you can put all thoughts of Edward Cullen to the back of your mind. These aren’t the kind of blood-suckers who sparkle in the sunlight. In fact, the mother and daughter duo don’t even have fangs. These ancient creatures prefer to secure dinner using a sharpened fingernail instead.
Our protagonist, Eleanor Webb (Ronan) does have one thing in common with Robert Pattinson’s sharp-toothed heartthrob though, she’s destined to live forever as a 16-year-old. And, from the looks of this fast-paced trailer, a love interest is on the cards too (albeit an ill-fated one)…
19-year-old Saoirse Ronan’s cinema CV includes The Host, Atonement, The Lovely Bones and Hanna. Gemma Arterton has starred in Tess of the D’Urbervilles, Song for Marion and Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters.
Byzantium, from the director of Interview with the Vampire and The Borgias, also stars Tom Hollander, Jonny Lee Miller, Daniel Mays and Warren Brown.
Byzantium is in UK cinemas 31 May
