Richard Curtis’s new film is something of a departure for the director. Not in the sense that it isn’t a romantic comedy (it is) but more in the sense that it’s also about time travel.
About Time stars Domhnall Gleeson – seen recently in Charlie Brooker’s Black Mirror – as unlucky-in-love Tim. When he turns 21, Tim’s father – played by Curtis regular Bill Nighy – reveals that the men in their family have a strange secret: the ability to travel through time.
Although he can’t change history – “You can’t kill Hitler or shag Helen of Troy, unfortunately” says his dad – Tim can have an effect on what happens and has happened in his own life. First thing on the agenda? To get a girlfriend.
That’s where Mary – Rachel McAdams – comes in. Tim sets about trying to win her heart, reliving key moments from their relationship until he gets them perfectly right – but he soon learns that time travel isn’t all plain sailing…
Amazingly, it’s not the first time Rachel McAdams has combined romance and time travel. The 34-year-old actress also starred in the film adaptation of Audrey Niffenegger’s novel The Time Traveller’s Wife.
Lindsay Duncan, Tom Hollander, Margot Robbie and Vanessa Kirby also star in About Time, which is written as well as directed by Curtis.
