Oscar-winning actress Natalie Portman is set to star as mad and murderous Lady Macbeth in a new film adaptation of the Shakespearean classic.
The 31-year-old star will play opposite Prometheus and Shame actor Michael Fassbender, who was yesterday revealed to be the lead in the drama.
It won’t be the first time Portman and Fassbender have shared screen time – the duo have recently worked together on a as-yet-untitled film from director Terrence Malick.
Portman, who has also starred in the Star Wars franchise, V for Vendetta, No Strings Attached and The Other Boleyn Girl, is perhaps best known for her role in Black Swan. The star took home best actress at the 2011 Academy Awards for her portrayal of troubled ballerina Nina in the dark and disturbing film, which saw her character lose her grip on reality and descend into madness.
Macbeth is one of the Bard’s bloodiest and most gothic dramas, following the ambitious Scottish lord Macbeth and his persuasive wife, who will stop at nothing to see him crowned king.
The tale has previously been tackled by celebrated filmmakers including Roman Polanski, Akira Kurosawa and Orson Welles. This new star-studded version will be produced by the company behind Shame and The King’s Speech, and directed by relative unknown Justin Kurzel.
