When we think of musicals, the image that springs to mind is one of energetic dance numbers and upbeat sing-a-longs, not a brawny boxing battle… but fans of the stage can look forward to a new type of production when Sylvester Stallone’s Oscar-winning franchise Rocky makes its Broadway debut next year.
Written and produced by Sly himself, the show first premiered in Germany last year to rave reviews and will begin previews across the Atlantic at the Winter Garden Theatre in February 2014, with an official opening expected in March.
Telling the familiar story of small-time boxer Rocky Balboa and his dramatic showdown with undefeated world heavyweight champion Apollo Creed, the Rocky musical is being choreographed by Steven Hoggett (Once) and Kelly Devine (Rock of Ages), featuring plenty of fight sequences.
“It’s very much like my life – not being recognised, not having the love of my life, just feeling alone and isolated. So I thought, why don’t I take those feelings and put them in the body of a boxer,” explained Stallone. “I had no idea that there are so many millions of people who felt the same way. It’s a story that can go on from generation to generation about how everyone is entitled to a moment of dignity.”
