Psycho prequel Bates Motel is set to air on Universal in the UK.
Starring British actor Freddie Highmore as Norman Bates and Up in the Air’s Vera Farminga as his mother Norma, Bates Motel is a contemporary imagining of the troubled Psycho character’s childhood.
Set before the events of Psycho, the thriller sees Norman and Norma move to quiet coastal town White Pine Bay and buy a motel after the death of Norman’s father, John.
Serial killer Norman Bates was first created by novelist Robert Bloch and has since been portrayed by Anthony Perkins in Hitchcock’s iconic Psycho film and the subsequent spin offs. The creepy character is known for his turbulent relationship with his mother, who he murders and then impersonates when he kills his victims.
Playing the iconic character in violent drama Bates Motel is a change of direction for 21-year-old Brit Freddie Highmore, who has previously starred in family-friendly films Finding Neverland, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, The Golden Compass and The Spiderwick Chronicles.
Bates Motel, which is currently shown on A&E Network in the US, has recently been renewed for a second season. Universal has acquired the rights to both the first and second series.
