Kate Winslet is set to star in a big screen adaptation of teen fiction favourite Divergent.
The Oscar-winning star, who has become known for roles in less commercial films like The Reader and Revolutionary Road, will play Jeanine Matthews alongside The Descendant’s Shailene Woodley, Aaron Eckhart, Theo James and Jai Courtney.
Divergent, the debut novel by US author Veronica Roth, is set in a dystopian future where humanity has organised itself into five ‘factions’ which each uphold a different value: selflessness, intelligence, peace, honesty and bravery.
The novel’s protagonist 16-year-old Tris (Woodley) lives with her family in the selfless faction, but when she attends the compulsory Choosing Ceremony which will determine her own future she is found to be a Divergent, a rare citizen who doesn’t fall neatly into any one of the five factions.
As she tries to find a path for herself, Tris discovers a plot to destroy all Divergents and must find out why she and her fellow Divergents are deemed so dangerous…
Winslet will play a villian, the leader of one of the five factions dedicated to intelligence and knowledge.
