Matt Smith on the Doctor Who 50th Special: “It’s not just an episode, it’s bigger and more exciting”

"What Steven Moffat has written is just spellbinding, It's one of the best ever," says the star

Filming on the Doctor Who 50th anniversary special starts soon, yet we still don’t know exactly what form it will take. Is it a stand-alone episode or a story in several parts? Perhaps Matt Smith can help…

“It’s a one-off piece,” confirmed the star, “but there are elements to it which are different to normal episodes.

“When you combine all the elements that are different, it’s not just an episode of Doctor Who, it’s something else – it’s something bigger and greater and more exciting. It’s funny as well, it’s so funny.”

Smith is convinced that Doctor Who showrunner Steven Moffat has outdone himself in writing the anniversary adventure, calling it “spellbinding” and “one of the best ever, ever, ever” episodes.

“He’s been waiting to write this script for ever,” Smith told The Telegraph. “I think he’s really done it justice.”

Rumours abound that the anniversary special will bring together multiple Doctors but Smith remained predictably coy about which actors would be involved (“There’s me, there’s Jenna…”) – although he did admit he’s been aware of who his co-stars will be for a while.

“I’ve known for ages, of course. I just lie to you all the time…”
