The new teaser begins with Chris Pine’s character Kirk being reprimanded by Captain Pike – “Do you have any idea what a pain you are?” – before launching into a series of fast-paced scenes, including a dramatic free-fall over the edge of a sheer cliff.

But fear not Cumberbatch fans as midway through the trailer the action cuts to shots of the Sherlock actor with Kirk describing his character, John Harrison, as a “fugitive”, before declaring “I want to take him out”.

The 80 seconds of footage also features shots of Spock (Zachary Quinto) and Nyota (Zoe Saldana) – as well as a glimpse of Scotty’s (Simon Pegg) terrified reaction to a gigantic creature of the deep.
