Black Mirror’s second series comes to an end tonight with the political satire The Waldo Moment.
The episode stars Eric & Ernie’s Daniel Rigby as a failed comedian called Jamie, who voices an acerbic animated bear, Waldo, who interviews real-life politicians on a topical TV comedy show.
When the bear’s popularity with viewers starts mushrooming, the show’s bosses hit on the idea of having him stand as a candidate in an upcoming by-election and Jamie’s life quickly spirals out of control.
Discussing The Waldo Moment recently, Black Mirror creator Charlie Brooker revealed that the idea for the episode was hatched quite some time ago.
He said: “Back when Chris [Morris] and I were doing Nathan Barley we had an idea for a storyline in which someone invented a sort of animated MP – like something from the band Gorillaz. It seemed like something that could potentially catch on.”
Directed by Garrow’s Law’s Bryn Higgins and featuring Chloe Pirrie, Jason Flemyng and Michael Shaeffer among its cast, The Waldo Moment will be broadcast on Channel 4 tonight at 10:00pm.
