Robert De Niro leaves his handprints on Hollywood

Silver Linings Playbook actor finally makes his mark in cement-based ceremony

There are few bigger stars in Tinseltown, yet only yesterday did Robert De Niro undergo one of Hollywood’s strangest rituals: immortalising himself by placing his handprints in cement outside TCL Chinese Theater in Los Angeles.

“You know, Joe Pesci always said I’d end up with my feet in cement,” said the 69-year-old star, known for his roles in gangster movies such as Goodfellas and The Godfather. “I don’t think this is what he had in mind.”

De Niro is nominated for an Oscar for the seventh time at this year’s Academy Awards, for his performance in romantic comedy-drama Silver Linings Playbook.

Billy Crystal and Silver Linings Playbook director David O Russell both spoke at the event, where De Niro imprinted his hands, feet and signature in cement. De Niro added the date, incorrectly writing “2/14/13” instead of “2/4/13” – an error that has since been quietly corrected.

Humphrey Bogart, Shirley Temple and John Wayne are among the cinema legends to have previously been acknowledged in the same way.
