Golden Globes for Brits Damian Lewis, Maggie Smith, Daniel Day-Lewis and Adele

On a big night for Homeland, Damian Lewis won best actor in a TV series at the US TV and film awards, while Maggie Smith, Daniel Day-Lewis and Adele also triumphed

British talent was recognised at this year’s Golden Globe awards, with Homeland actor Damian Lewis, Downton Abbey’s Maggie Smith, Lincoln star Daniel Day-Lewis and Skyfall singer-songwriter Adele all bringing home prizes.

Lewis was named best actor in a TV series for his performance as congressman and former US Marine Nicholas Brody in political thriller Homeland, which also landed the best actress award for his co-star Claire Danes, and best TV series.

“I want to dedicate this to my mum, who is up there somewhere looking down and bursting with pride that her son is doing so well at acting,” said Lewis in his acceptance speech.

Maggie Smith, who did not attend the ceremony, beat her American rivals to land best supporting actress for her role as Dowager Countess Lady Violet in ITV period drama Downton Abbey, but missed out on best actress in a comedy or musical for movie Quartet.

Daniel Day-Lewis was named best actor in a drama for his starring role in Lincoln, Steven Spielberg’s biopic of the US president. Accepting the award, Day-Lewis asked “Are you sure there’s room for another ex-president on this stage?”, referring to a surprise appearance earlier in the evening from former president Bill Clinton, who introduced the film.

Lincoln, hotly tipped for the Oscars, lost out in two other high-profile Golden Globes categories to Argo. The dramatisation of a 1980 CIA operation in Iran won best drama film and best director for Ben Affleck, who had failed to make the Academy Awards shortlist.

Meanwhile, Adele seemed shocked to have picked up the award for best original song for Skyfall, the theme to the latest James Bond movie.

“Honestly, I’ve come out for a night out with my friend Ida – we’re new mums – I have literally come for a night out. I was not expecting this,” she said.
