BBC’s new crime drama series Ripper Street, which stars Matthew Macfadyen, Jerome Flynn and MyAnna Buring begins tonight at 9pm on BBC1.
Set in and around Whitechapel during 1889, the series (created by Mistresses writer Richard Warlow) will focus on the notorious H Division, which is charged with keeping order in the all-consuming and chaotic East London streets in the aftermath of the “Ripper” murders.
Danny Cohen, Controller, BBC1, says of the drama: “Ripper Street is a gripping new drama for BBC1. Set against the backdrop of a fevered historical London, I believe it has the quality and intensity to be a hit with BBC1 viewers.”
RT TV editor, Alison Graham said: “Richard Warlow’s full-on script, in the first of an eight-part series, and the excellent production design pull us straight into Ripper Street. You can almost smell the stench of a capital groping its way to prosperity after the Industrial Revolution. But it’s a strange thing, a stylised oddity and, oh my, it’s very kinky.”
