Borgen returns for a second series on BBC4 in January

The Danish political drama is back with Birgitte Nyborg (Sidse Babett Knudsen) facing peril in Afghanistan

Danish drama Borgen will return for its second series on Saturday 5 January at 9pm, beginning with a double bill.

Sidse Babett Knudsen reprises her role of prime minister Birgitte Nyborg, with the opening episodes seeing the political leader visiting troops in Afghanistan, only for the Taliban to launch an offensive against several Danish camps.

On the personal front, Birgitte continues to put off signing the papers for her divorce from Phillip following the martial ructions that ended the opening season.

The ten-part run also sees the return of Pilou Asbaek as media advisor Kasper Juul, Birgitte hjort Sorensen as journalist Katrine Fonsmark and Soren Spanning as politician Lars Hesselboe.

The first series of Borgen took the International Award at this year’s Baftas, where it beat off competition from fellow Nordic hit The Killing.
