Les Misérables creator Cameron Mackintosh on taking his musical to the movies

"Without London we would never, ever have had this film tonight - it led the way for the rest of the world to fall in love with Cosette"

Andrew Lloyd Webber may be a Lord, but producer Cameron Mackintosh can rival his ranking when it comes to the West End. Last night was a proud moment for the Les Misérables creator as he walked the red carpet at the long-awaited world premiere of its big-screen adaptation.

Braving the chilly temperatures, he joined his star-studded cast of Hugh Jackman, Russell Crowe, Anne Hathaway, along with director Tom Hooper, 27 years after the famous score first appeared on the West End stage – just around the corner from last night’s buzzing Leicester Square gathering.

RadioTimes.com caught up with him to chat about the expectations of the musical’s scores of fans, the differences they can expect from the movie and the glowing reception it has received so far…

Les Misérables is released in UK cinemas nationwide on 11 January 2013
